Just a little discussion for us, seeing as it's yet another Tuesday without Idol. :(

I wanna know the little moments in David's performances that really amaze you. Whether it's a specific line that he sings beautifully, or a facial expression, or a movement he does with his body -- just the little nuances he adds to a performance that give you the chills.

I do have quite a few, but the one that gets me the most is during his live performance of "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing". It's when he's belting the "Yeah-yeah-yeaaaah!" line and he clutches the mic and extends his left arm out to the side and just throws himself into the chorus of the song. It's a tiny little thing, but it completely makes the performance for me.

What about you guys?

ETA: heeee, don't worry about making lists! i love that you guys are so interested. (and pardon my lack of capitilization. i'm overloading my brain doing a review sheet for my algebra finals, so. proper grammar is lost on me now. also, i'm totally going to be responding to all of you. you're making me want to watch every single performance over again.)

and, since i've got dcook on the ipod now, you can add your favorite vocal moments from his studio performances as well. i only mention this because "billie jean" just ended, and the way he sings "his eyeeees were like mine" kills me. and in the bridge of ABMB, the line "when your days and your nights get a little bit colder" has seriously been repeated more than any five seconds of any song, ever

back to prepping for finals. :(

Usually it's his ending notes that get me...but especially on "The World I Know", there was so much beauty and emotion in that final note, weighed and filled with everything that he was feeling in that moment.

I agree, this one last note was perfect *sigh*

I absolutely melt every time I listen to Always Be My Baby and at the very end when he sings "You will linger onnn" and holds out the on and it is just amazing. In both the live and studio performance. Gives me chills every time.
Jun. 4th, 2008 01:23 am (UTC)
I honestly think that's one of my all time favorite lines in a song now. I totally get chills too.

I liked the almost snarl (?) he did in baba o'riley when he says "and i don't need to be forgiven"

and in happy together when he closes his eyes and curls his lip, right before one of the choruses.

AND basically everything in yo face
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
and in happy together when he closes his eyes and curls his lip, right before one of the choruses.

YES. I have always loved that part, and I even noticed it back in the Top 24 when I wasn't QUITE so flaily about him just yet. I was like, "...Wow. That was hot."
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:21 am (UTC)
There are so many nuances but what gets me because of the number of times I've watching the last bit of the finale is when he invites the entire group to share in his moment with him. It's just so David Cook!
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:47 am (UTC)
I just re-watched that moment, and I still get teary eyed.

The first line of the chorus to "Eleanor Rigby" when David spreads his arms out while singing "I look at all the lonely people..." I still get chills.

And after the very last note of "Hello," when he let his lips linger on the microphone for just a moment...HOT.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:28 am (UTC)

When he thumps his chest in ER and also when he throws his arm out when the chorus starts. Also when he moves forward with the flashing lights behind him. Wow. I loved so many parts of that one. I miss his unabashed confidence that he had back then and I blame Simon for squashing it with his asinine comments.

But I agree about the rock back and throw into the "yeah, yeah.." IDWMAT. Loved that.

Also Billie Jean when he kinda pumps the mic stand with the music. Awesome. There many other moments in that one too.

This is actually very hard. Now I want to go compile a list LOL.
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:43 pm (UTC)
I remember watching him pound his chest in ER, and there was another moment where he got this look on his face, right before, "I look at all the lonely...PEOPLEEEEE!" when you can tell he has SO MUCH ENERGY on that stage. I felt so happy for him that night, because he was so shameless about bouncing around and going crazy during the performance. Like you, I thought that kind of confidence was so endearing.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:26 am (UTC)
The way David holds the mic and the mic stand in his performances. He does something where he turns away slightly and taps the mic which intrigues me for some reason.
Example: the beginning of "Billie Jean"
Jun. 4th, 2008 01:58 am (UTC)

One of my favorite moments happened pretty early on. During his performance of Eleanor Rigby, when he gets to the chorus and he throws his arms out and the lights go crazy and the music picks up. That is when I knew he was a rock star; it gives me chills.
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:48 pm (UTC)
agreed. i loved that he was so shameless about throwing himself into the performance. you could just feel all the excitement and energy beaming from him, to be on that stage in that atmosphere.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:27 am (UTC)
There are so many, but particularly the part from "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in which he sang, To the dark and the endless skies, my love. It was gorgeous. He lifted up the key and it was unique and even Simon clapped. That's something that sticks out in my mind.
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:49 pm (UTC)
that entire performance was stunning, especially the part you mentioned. ♥
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:28 am (UTC)
Mine is actually right after yours, the "i dont wanna close my eyes" line. Its actually one of my ringtones!
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:51 pm (UTC)
heee! honestly, i have so many moments that i enjoy, but those couple seconds from IDWMAT came to mind first. it was definitely similar to him spreading his arms in the chorus of "Eleanor Rigby". the lightshow started and the guitarist tore it up and the crowd was going COMPLETELY CRAZY. so, to combine all of that with david completely throwing himself into the chorus -- ugh, TOO MUCH TO HANDLE.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:33 am (UTC)
I adore almost more than anything else whenever he smiles while he's singing -- see in Baba O'Riley, Yo Face and Don't Wanna Miss A Thing and The World I Know and Hero and Sharp Dressed Man. When he does it, I just get the impression he's seriously so happy to be up there performing, that he's in the zone and he knows it, and it just makes me smile back at the screen.
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:53 pm (UTC)
Agree, agree, agree. I especially loved all of his live performances at the Nokia. The energy from the crowd gave us some amazing David moments, particularly when he sang the first line of "Hero", looked to the audience, and just smiled. My heart. ♥
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:35 am (UTC)
I'd have to agree that the time in Elenor Rigby when he throws out his arms... you just knew he meant business and was enjoying every moment of it.

Also any time there was a break in the song that he's step back and just smile. If I remember correctly there was a moment in All I Really Need Is You.

Just everything about I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. That performance was just perfect.

Now I'm off to relive every single performance.... ^_^
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:55 pm (UTC)
I absolutely love the moment during "I Still Haven't Found..." when he goes onto the platform behind the judges, and when he sings "I have held the hand of the devil", he just throws his arm up in the air. It's badass. Like you said, it's those kind of moments where he's saying, "I'm performing, I own the stage, and I'm awesome. Rock out with me." So many of his performances showcase that.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:37 am (UTC)
I liked his BIIIIGGG ending in "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" =)
Jun. 4th, 2008 07:56 pm (UTC)
Oh, who doesn't? The concentration he put into the note, the reverb, the unbelievable response he got from the crowd upon finishing. You can't not love that one.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:44 am (UTC)
during "eleanor rigby" when he's started to get into the chorus, he throws out and extends his arms while singing "i look at all the lonely people." it's like the stage is his, the people are his, he has arrived. i love that.

aw, absolutely. so much crying was done by me that night.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:53 am (UTC)
TBH, I do a lot more listening than watching w/ Cook. I think it's his steady self-awareness that impresses me the most. It's a constant thing with him but it's something that astounds me through any of his performances. No matter what week it was or what he was singing, he sang it with pride.
Jun. 4th, 2008 08:00 pm (UTC)
I've always been really impressed by how he seemed totally game for whatever Idol threw at him. Of course, we've learned through interviews that nobody liked the group songs or anything terribly cheesy, not even David. But the way he STILL threw himself into it -- he danced BOX STEPS in the Top 3 group song, for crying out loud -- was something I really admired. So many others -- I'm looking at you, Amanda Overmyer -- so blatantly showed their distaste for what Idol was making them do. But David took it in stride and always stood out to me. Maybe that's why I've always found his voice to be so easy to hear in group songs, because he's not half-assing the vocals, like everyone else.
Jun. 4th, 2008 12:54 am (UTC)
There are so many of those, seriously. It's not just his voice and the way he sings; the way he performs, i.e. his facial expressions and the way he moves, adds so much to the whole DCook experience. It's a joy to watch him sing.

I second everything that has been mentioned so far. I'll add something that hasn't been mentioned yet - during TWIK, when he's singing "have we eyes to see?" he looks at the camera and then does this thing with his head, he moves it to the side in time with the music (watch from 1:00), and I can't explain why, but I think it's freaking HOT. I just love when he does that. Then right after that, when he sings "love is gathering", he smiles, and it's *so* sweet.
Jun. 4th, 2008 01:05 am (UTC)

This is another of my favorite things he does. In fact, I was just re-watching that performance about 10 min. ago.

1. As a few before me already mentioned, the throwing his arms out moment during Eleanor Rigby!

2. During The world I know (besides this perfect last note), I love on the line "Hope still lingers on." the way he sings the word "on" (this is always the moment when I start crying *lol*) and also when he starts with "So I walk up on high and I step to the edge to see my world below." Love!!!

There are so many for me, good lord, but the ones that really stand out for me happened in "Eleanor Rigby" -- throwing his arms wide open on the chorus (see icon ;), that face he makes as he grabs for the microphone after that (and the look on his face just before he gets ready for the last line!), the jumping around like a little kid that just scored the winning touchdown (complete with the "woo-hoo-hoo!!!" at the end LOL) when he's done with the song, his completely starry-eyed wonder at performing in front of so many people (at that time, it was the most he'd been in front of) -- my God, he's just so chuffed with himself, I absolutely love it!!

seriously, go remind yourselves that there once was a time he was under the radar.
Jun. 4th, 2008 08:10 pm (UTC)
eleanor rigby was such a milestone for him. top 12 week, a huge stage and the biggest crowd he had performed in front of thus far -- to get that energy from the song and the lightshow and the response from the audience made me so happy for him. you can tell he was just soaking it all in that night.
Jun. 4th, 2008 01:03 am (UTC)
Oh dear, there is one little moment in all of his performances for me. Yes, in each and everyone of them.

Happy Together - when he scrunches up his nose, eyes closed before he launches into the last chorus

All Right Now - Right after the first chorus, he goes - yeah - in that really deep voice. Gawd.

Hello - the famous stalkery snarl "or is there someone loving you". His facial expression, the way he delivers the line, it's just chilling.

Eleanor Rigby - The growl on "Where do they all belong", and then just after that, the way he walks fast up to the front of the stage while he sings "father mckenzie". And then when he launches into the second "all the lonely people", his mike stand almost falls over, and he grabs it, no worries, no problem.

Day Tripper - the whole thing is sexy as hel, but the "she's a big teaser oh oh yeah", with the little hip action... *thud*

Billy Jean - that long amazing glory note........ took my breath away.

Little Sparrow - The soft "Oye Maidens" makes me melt every. single. time. And then he slays me with the following "Never trust the hearts of men" - the grit is just so amazing.

Innocent - "One day", pointing at the ceiling. Chills down my spine every single time.

Always Be My Baby - "You will linger ooooooooooooon" is without a doubt my favorite part of the performance. But seriously, the whole thing made me cry and pump my fist and grin like a loon all at the same time when I first saw it. It still bring tears to my eyes whenever I watch it.

Music of the Night - "Falling, floating" - the low voice really makes me take notice of the lyrics. "Touch me, trust me" makes me wnt to do just that.

I'm Alive - "Every day there's the sun to keep you warm" - he points a finger up, and growls his way through the last part... I'm not too sure why, but I always smile at that part!

All I really Need - The very last "All I really need is you", with the eyes closing up, head falling to the side, it gives my goosebumps.

Baba O"Reilly - absolutely adore how he drags the notes in the beginning...

Hungry Like The Wolf - "Woman you want me give me a sign" - the growl, the nodding, the sexiness in his eyes... LOVE!

I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - the yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!!! made me gasp the first time I heard it.

Yo Face - "In the daaaaaaaaaaaaaark endless sky" - the way he holds the word dark as he closes his eyes for it... That sealed the deal for me.

Dare You To Move - The second time he sings "I Dare you to move, I DARE you to move", his face looks like he's in pain, his voice convey the urgency f the lyrics, it's just gorgeous.

Still Haven't Found - the very, very first note. He smiles before he starts singing, and I knew he'd kill the song. And for some reason, that made the whole song for me.

Dream Big - Right after he finishes singing the first chorus, just before he launches into the second verse, he looks down at his guitar, makes some weird motion with his mouth, and drags his hand on the cords. THAT was so rockstar... Made it for me. Oh, and when he flubs the lyrics, his right eyebrow just barely move up...

The World I know - can I chose the whole thing? Just like dreamerren, the very last, held note gave me goosebumps and made me cry.

Sorry I went a little crazy... But I truly couldn't choose just one moment.

Like a bunch of people have said, the arm extension during Eleanor Rigby gets me every time. It was just... this perfect amalgamation of visual and audio at once... so amazing, and so DC.

Also, despite the fact that, honestly, I pretty much hated David's vocals on Innocent, I have always loved when he strains to hit the words "all" and "are" and he pulls back from the microphone each time and his facial expression so perfectly mimics the strain in his voice. (Around :50 to 1:00 here.)

I'm sure there are a million more that I can't think of right now. I will probably post again lol.
Jun. 4th, 2008 02:13 am (UTC)
Okay, some others.

During Hero when he first comes out and just looks to his left at the crowd and smiles and it's beautiful. And then whe Archie comes out and David points at him to make sure he gets his recognition and proper intro - always such a humble gentleman.

In All Right Now, after the first chorus when he sings "let me tell you now" that little waving point thing he does (not sure how to describe it lol) as well as the guitar "solo" right after. Okay, it hardly counts as a solo, but it was a good little riff and showed that he can do more than just play rhythm guitar.

Hello is just so full of things I love, I can't pick one thing. Seriously, that whole performance is mesmerizing to me, start to finish.

The hand over the heart after Music of the Night.

Baba O'Riley: The last note, that "teenage WAAAAAAAASTE", is so perfectly gritty and raw and every time I listen to it I put the volume up for that final note, just to feel it all the way in my chest. ♥

During Don't Want to Miss a Thing, after he sings "and feel your heart so close to mine" he brings his right hand to the mic, but he puts two fingers around the actual mic, and two around the mic stand. It's such a random little thing, but I just love how he's holding it.

Any time he makes those CFM eyes to the camera and any time he cries.

In that little video clip you posted, I have always been a HUGE FAN of the smile he gives while looking at the camera. I mean, I adore all the half-smiles and smirks, because they're hot. (LMAO, "jot".)
