Whether it’s American Idol or a celebrity charity contest, David Cook and his fans know what it takes to win. Their passion and commitment to help cure brain cancer is what’s driving their spectacular showing in the Mozilla Firefox Charity Challenge.
To date, David and his fans have raised over $33,000 for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC2). The online challenge, hosted by Crowdrise, runs through January 11th, and the charity that ends up with the most donations by January 11, 2012 will receive a $25,000 donation from Mozilla.
David joined the Challenge for very personal reasons. In 2009, he lost his 37-year-old brother to a brain tumor after a long and courageous battle with the disease. Since then, David and his fans have been on a mission to support the cutting-edge research funded by ABC2.
They have participated along side brain tumor survivors to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Race for Hope 5k Run/Walk in Washington, DC. This March, David plans to run even further to raise awareness, “I’ll be running the 2012 Honda LA Marathon for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure," he said. "This will be a challenging race, but one accomplishment that I will be incredibly proud of and honored to do.”
Mozilla, makers of the popular internet browser Firefox, launched the holiday challenge to promote the spirit of doing good. “We’ve brought together thousands of people to build a better Web -- not for profit, but for good," states Mozilla on its site. "This holiday season helps us take it one step further.” The Challenge features other high-profile celebrities, including: Jason Bateman (City Year), Sophia Bush (F-Cancer), David Blaine (Charity: Water), Edward Norton (The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust), Jonah Hill (Nothing But Nets) and others.
David is offering weekly prizes and giveaways to entice donors to get involved. In an earlier contest, he gave away signed copies of his self-titled CD, David Cook. Now until the end of the Challenge, fans who donate $24 to the ABC2 will be eligible to win a 5 minute Skype chat with the American Idol.
“We Believe” is a beautiful and uplifting song on David’s latest CD, This Loud Morning – it's also an anthem for our cause. We believe in a brain cancer cure and we believe David and his fans will help us get there.

My husband is a domestic violence counselor, who is trying to get "nice guys" to help prevent violence against women and children. He cofounded an organization called Stand Up Guys. They are enlisting "well intended men" to sign the Stand Up Guy pledge. They have gotten signatures from several state and local politicians, schools and colleges, some well known sports figures and a few thousand other men. I told him I felt David was a Stand Up Guy, basically because of the way I have seen him interact with women and children, and his lyrics are not demeaning to women (as many contemporary songs are). I suggested we meet David and ask him to sign the pledge.
Last Saturday at Northern Lights we had the opportunity to go to the meet and greet. I explained to David about the purpose of Stand Up Guys, and my husband asked him and the rest of the band if they would sign the pledge. They each read and signed it without hesitation. They are the first contempory music artists to sign it. Thank you Kyle, Andy, Devin, Monty and David, you are all Stand Up Guys.
Stand Up Guy Pledge
- I pledge to treat all women in my life with dignity, respect & equality
- I pledge to take the time to listen to the women in my life and acknowledge that their perspective is valuable and is equally important as mine.
- I pledge to have the courage to speak out about sexist values, attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate violence against women.
- I pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women, sexual assault or domestic violence.
- I pledge to learn, practice and teach non-violent methods to resolve conflict.
